Bills to Allow Montessori Credentialed Teachers Route to NJ State Teacher Certification

In December 2023 and January 2024, The New Jersey State Legislature unaminously passed Bills S3172/A4689. These bills, introduced by Sen. Vin Gopal (D-11), establishes an NJ state teacher certification route for candidates with Montessori teaching credentials and a bachelor’s degree. This bill, similar to those passed in nearly a dozen other states, could help alleviate the teacher shortage, pave the way for public Montessori programs, and give a path for the more than 100+ private Montessori preschools to become private providers for districts. Governor Murphy “pocket vetoed” these bills on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, dashing hopes that these bills would become law this year. But we’re not giving up! Join us in working to support the reintroduction of similar bills into this new legislative session!
